We are a small-scale sheep producer in SW Washington, members of the SW Washington Sheep Producers, The Livestock Conservancy, Washington State Sheep Producers, American Southdown Breeders' Association, and active in Clark County 4H.
Our long term goals are focused on increased lamb production, expansion to separate breeds of animal such as pigs, and "farm walk/experience" events in order to generate a stable income source. To meet these long term goals, we are seeking options to expand our usable acreage.
Currently we are a 10 acre farm located in La Center, Washington. We are owned and operated by Josh and Joanne Cady as well as Jonah Cady. For the past several years, the farm has generated income through two income streams: The selling of eggs from free range chickens and the sale of Hampshire Lambs at the Junior Livestock Auction of the Clark County Fair. In order to generate additional income, in 2019, Cady Farms purchased seven registered female Southdown sheep for breeding stock. The aged Southdown Ewes were bred this fall. In addition to the aforementioned livestock, we also co-own and run 16 Suffolk ewe sheep on an additional 5 leased acres as well as approximately eight (8) additional Suffolk buck lambs at a separate location.
Our short term plans consist of successful lambing this spring, maximizing existing acreage to complete a rotational grazing plan, seek organic certification, and adding an additional dozen laying hens in conjunction with 25 broiler chickens. Following the Fall of 2020, we will need to aggressively pursue additional acreage to contain our operation.
