I am a young woman intending to build and operate my own farm. I'm looking for 10-20 acres on the west side of the Cascade Mountains. I need land suitable for vegetable farming and pasture. Ideally, the land would have a natural water feature and/or some forested area to retrieve timber for personal use.
I have spent the last two years intensely studying farming by reading every book I can get my hands on. I have practical experience in vegetable and berry gardening, as well as experience building on my parents home. I have worked with animals in many different contexts since I was a child: from raising them in my home, learning about them through hands on seminars, and working seasonally with horses, cattle, and goats.
My initial plan is to set up a basic but functional temporary home with solar power, to collect rainwater to build a rudimentary irrigation system, and to sow the garden. After establishment of temporary habitation, I will begin construction of a permanent home, barn, fencing, well pump and irrigation, orchard, extended garden, small sheep herd, and other facilities. I have multiple close friends who intend to help me with construction and farm labor in exchange for temporary housing. My intended business, after regular and surplus harvesting, is to sell vegetables, fruits, and wool produced on the land. I believe it can be profitable within a year, and I have work to sustain me financially until then.
