Young food makers interested in leasing or purchasing land in Western Washington

Description:

Hello! My name is Brandon and my wife Lila and I are looking to lease or purchase land in Western Washington. We recently started a small batch tortilla business on Lopez Island called Little Earth Tortilleria. We've been selling at the Lopez Island and San Juan Island Farmers market. e use a traditional method called nixtamalization. We cook the corn and let it soak overnight. We grind the corn using volcanic stones to create masa. We press every tortilla by hand and cook them on a cast iron griddle. This process activates natural flavors that aren’t available in most store-bought tortillas.

Who I am and What I'm looking for:

In 2018 we lived in Seattle and loved exploring the Pacific Northwest. In 2019 we moved to Vermont so that I could enroll in the Farmer Training Program at the University of Vermont. The Farmer Training Program is a hands-on program for aspiring farmers that provides a skills-based education in sustainable farming. As students, we run all aspects of the university's 10-acre organic farm, including our 100 member CSA, farmers market and wholesale accounts. We're looking for a place to run our tortilla business and grow organic dry corn for our tortillas. We're looking to lease or purchase 5 or more acres of land. If there is housing available on the property and a commercial kitchen or pace for a kitchen that would be ideal.

Farming Experience:

As a student in the University of Vermont Farmer Training Program, we ran all aspects of the university's 10 acre organic farm. This includes: direct seeding, greenhouse seeding, transplanting, cultivating, setting up and repairing drip and overhead irrigation, operating tractors, applying amendments, harvesting, washing, packing, interacting with our 100 CSA members, and selling at farmers markets. My partner Lila and I also lived on a 10 acre farm in Hyde Park, Vermont where we had layer hens, a beehive, and a vegetable garden.
