We are Lizzie and Austin (25 and 27 years old), a passionate and driven couple eager to begin our own market garden farm in WA. We currently work full time at Local Roots Farm in Duvall, WA. Lizzie has 3 years of experience working on organic farms, and Austin has begun his journey with farming intellectually, reading every major organic farming book written, and devising business models to experiment with. Lizzie graduated from Whitman College (Walla Walla) in 2017 with a BA in Religious Studies (Concentration SE Asian Religions), and Austin graduated from Western WA University (Bellingham) in 2016 with a BS in Biology.
We, Austin and Lizzie, are looking for land to invest our time and energy into with dedication to start a market garden and initiate land regeneration permaculture systems. We love the Bellingham community and seek to farm in Whatcom County. We plan to take a PDC (Permaculture Design Course) spring of 2021 with Bellingham local permaculturists. Our passion for regenerative agriculture and land stewardship drives our pursuit to farm. We have both worked as wilderness guides for adolescents and have taken on extensive journeys through wildlands - Austin hiked the 2,700 mile Pacific Crest Trail in 2017, and Lizzie hiked the 800 mile Te Araroa Trail in NZ in 2020. We seek to lease land for our first few market farming seasons, but soon after plan to purchase land to invest in over our lifetime. Ideally, we find a landowner who is willing to negotiate a lease-to-own plan with us!
Lizzie has worked on farms in NC, AK, OR, and WA since 2014 when she first WWOOFed for 2 months at a Sorghum farm in Mars Hill NC, called Double Tree Farm. NOLS Alaska Farm - Palmer Alaska - 2016 - full season crew. Great Vow Zen Monastery Farm - Clatskanie, OR - 2015, 2017 season crew member. Local Roots Farm - Duvall, WA - 2020 crew member. Austin has worked at Animas Farm - Durango, CO - 2019 - WWOOF experience - crew member, Local Roots Farm - Duvall, WA - 2020 crew member.
Short term plans are to build greenhouse and hoop house, cultivate (eventually using minimal tillage principles and hand tools) 1.5 - 2 acres of land to grow on. If we can work out a lease-to-own plan, immediately plant tree-fruit orchard! First Season would have small-scale CSA program (15-25 CSA members, one box/week, June - October, $500/member, 7-12 diverse vegetable per box). The main business avenue our first year will be selling a variety of vegetables at local Farmers' Markets.
