I am seeking a land lease for 0.5-2 acres in Western Washington for sustainably grown produce and berries.
I have been interested in farming for a number of years - my first experience with growing food started in college growing microgreens in my dorm! I fell in love with food and growing things, and I wanted to expand my knowledge on how to start my own farm business. I have spent the last couple of years learning as much as I can in order to start something of my own. I am looking for at most a couple of acres with some access to farm structures and equipment to get me started.
I initially decided to formally learn how to garden, so I took a class entitled "Comprehensive Organic Gardening" at Tilth Alliance in the Spring of 2019. I then worked for a few months in the summer at a small scale, no-till farm in Everett, WA. After this, I worked at a small startup company in Seattle that was dedicated to connecting farmers directly to their consumers with online sales. This experience helped me learn about how farmers run their businesses. I currently work for the Pierce County Conservation District as a Gleaning Specialist for the Harvest Pierce County team. I am responsible for harvesting and collecting food and fruit from farms and fruit tree owners across the county. I also have experience in fruit tree pruning and maintenance. In addition to my work as a Gleaning Specialist, I am currently enrolled in Viva Farms' Practicum in Sustainable Agriculture, where I am gaining hands-on farming experience. This includes farm planning, business planning, crop rotation, irrigation, and pest management.
I would like to start farming on a small scale at first in order to help me spend time finding a market for my food. I would like to begin as a small scale CSA farm with no more than 30 CSA shares for the first 2 years. After that, I plan on increasing CSA shares as well as reaching out to local restaurants who are interested in purchasing locally grown produce.
